An Author’s Afternoon featured Jai Arjun Singh, an author of books on Hindi films, spoke to author Rajorshi Chakraborti on November 18, 2015. The event was presented by Shree Cement and organised by Prabha Khaitan Foundation, in association with Siyahi and T2 at Taj Bengal Kolkata.
Jai Arjun Singh is a journalist author who has written three books on cinema. He discussed his latest book The World of Hrishikesh Mukherjee : The Filmmaker Everyone Loves . He spoke of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s responsibility towards producers and when his favourite film at the box office he made films like Chupke Chupke, Anand and Golmaal which appealed to a larger audience. He also said that Hrishikesh Mukherjee rued the fact that Amitabh Bacchan, about whom he had high hopes, “ended up becoming a stuntman” as in his later films as an angry young man he had to indulge in a lot of fights.
Jai Arjun Singh came up with a lot of information hitherto unknown about the director, Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He said that Mukherjee felt that evil always is more wide-ranging than the effect of good. As a little bit of poison in milk can spoil the entire milk but a whole bucket of milk cannot make the slightest difference.
