Dr. Sugata Bose, Member of Parliament, historian and also the grand-nephew of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was the guest at An Author’s Afternoon on 2nd August 2014.The conversation between the author and economist-filmmaker Suman Ghosh mainly focused on Netaji and World affairs, Politics and his alma mater Presidency College.
Dr Sugata Bose was the Professor of History at Harvard University. Bose has also served as the Founding Director of Harvard’s South Asia Institute. His best known books are A Hundred Horizons: the Indian Ocean in the Age of Global Empire, Modern South Asia: History, Culture, Political Economy and His Majesty’s Opponent: Subhas Chandra Bose and India’s Struggle against Empire.
Dr. Sugata Bose shared his experience with Prof Amartya Sen that when he was a PhD student he had gone to a seminar at Oxford University where Prof Amartya Sen was the Drummond Professor of Political Economy. He had heard about Bose’s research paper on 1930’s Depression and called him as during that time he was working on his book Poverty and Famines and in it, there was a chapter on the Bengal famine.‘’The best thing about Amartya da was how well he would take criticism from an over-enthusiastic graduate student’’ said Sugata Bose.
